The star of the upcoming Superman film got his start on the stage in Philadelphia.

Hollywood's newest Man of Steel didn't come from Krypton. Instead, actor David Corenswet of the upcoming Superman film, came from the cozy world of Philadelphia theatre. In a new interview with CBS Sunday Morning filmed at Arden Theatre in Philadelphia, Corenswet said that he made his acting debut at the age of nine in a local production of All My Sons in 2002.

This bio from the program read that Corenswet is a "fourth grader who is a big fan of the Marx Brothers, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Bill Irwin, and of course, Star Wars. He also loves building with Legos. All My Sons marks his first appearance on the legitimate stage.” In other words, a theatre kid.

His late father, John, was also a stage actor. And Corenswet, who is Juilliard trained, spent the beginning of his career doing theatre in Philadelphia. He also shouted out the Upper Darby Summer Stage program where “every summer I did two or three musicals in this great program.”

Yes, this Superman can sing (though he wouldn't comment on whether or not he will sing in the superhero film). “I have an older-school baritone voice so a lot of the modern musicals, I just can’t sing high enough for. But give me a Music Man or a Guys and Dolls, I really love that stuff.” Or how about the classic Charles Strouse musical It's a Bird... It's a Plane... It's Superman? Watch the CBS Sunday Morning interview in the video above.

Superman flies into movie theatres July 11, with Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan (The Sign in Sydney Brustein's Window) as Lois Lane. Written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), this new Superman is the first from the newly created DC Studios, which is hoping to reboot the entirety of the DC cinematic universe.

Corenswet promises a more optimistic Superman more in the vein of Christopher Reeves, rather than the darker tone from the previous film Man of Steel. And yes, there will be red briefs, with the actor saying, "He puts the red underwear on, a) so that everybody can see him, against the blue sky you can see the red trunks, b) so that everybody knows he doesn't take himself too seriously. He's not trying to look cool."
