Are you feeling too online? Luckily, Dave Malloy's musical Octet, about internet addiction, is getting a new production at Hudson Valley Shakespeare in Garrison, New York. And Playbill has a first look at the production. Watch the cast perform the musical's opening number, "The Forest," in the video above.
Created by Malloy (Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812) and directed by Amanda Dehnert (Love’s Labor’s Lost), Octet begins performances August 11, opens August 16, and runs through September 7.
The a cappella musical is about a group of strangers who join a support group for those with destructive internet habits.
The cast for Octet includes Adam Bashian, Melissa Mahoney, Gunnar Manchester, Anand Nagraj, Jill Paice, Mia Pak, Luis Quintero, and Alexis Tidwell.
Octet premiered Off-Broadway in 2019 at Signature Theatre and won the 2020 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical. The album featuring that first cast is available to stream. The musical has since been produced in Berkeley, California, and will also be produced in Toronto and Washington, D.C.
Octet will feature costume design by Tracey Christensen, lighting design by Marcella Barbeau, sound design by Ken Travis, and properties by Buffy Cardoza. Simone Allen serves as music director, and Janelle Caso is the stage manager.
This new engagement is produced by special arrangement with Plate Spinner Productions.
HVS’ 2025 season also includes William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, directed by longtime company member Ryan Quinn (The Murder of Roger Ackroyd); and Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker, directed by Davis McCallum (Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play) and featuring Kurt Rhoads and Nance Williamson.
