Victor/Victoria, the controversial -- albeit top-grossing -- Broadway musical will open a two-year national tour May 16-June 1, 1997 at Theatre Under the Stars in Houston, TX.
The show's New York spokesman, Peter Cromarty, confirmed the tour, but would not confirm whether star Julie Andrews would recreate her Tony-nominated (but-declined) Broadway performance as the crisscross-dressing chanteuse Victoria Grant (nor any other casting).
Cromarty also would not say whether the New York show will close to tour, or if a second company will be set up.
Theatre Under the Stars, in its season release, said the show's director/librettist Blake Edwards "will be in Houston to mount the new company for TUTS. Planned for a two-year tour following its Houston premiere, the production will include new material not seen in the current Broadway production."
TUTS spokesperson Susie Works indicated that the tour also will play Los Angeles at some point, but had no other cities or dates. For tickets or information on the Houston production: (713) 622-8887.
