The cast and creative team of New York City Center Encores! original musical revue Hey, Look Me Over! met the press to discuss bringing to life eight musicals—some possibly forgotten over the years.

The show, running February 7–11, celebrates shows that have not yet been presented on the Encores! stage, including Jamaica, Wildcat, George M., and Mack and Mabel.

Among those taking the stage in various roles are Vanessa Williams, Carolee Carmello, and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth—each taking roles originated by iconic women of stage and screen.

Williams sang “Push the Button” from the 1957 musical Jamaica, originally sung by Lena Horne. The jazz legend has been a longtime inspiration for Williams, who routinely sings her standards in concerts and, in After Midnight, on the Broadway stage. “Lena Horne has always been one of my icons that I’ve worshipped and adored my entire life…I love the fact that I can step into her shoes and bring her back to life,” she says.

Carmello and Neuwirth will pay tribute to the late Lucille Ball and Elaine Stritch, respectively, as they perform numbers from Wildcat and Sail Away. “When you step into a role like that, it can be a little scary because you know people have preconceptions,” Carmello explains, “but you just have to try to put your own stamp on it and feel connected to it in your own way.”

Hey, Look Me Over!, directed by Marc Bruni and musically directed by Rob Berman, will also feature Clyde Alves, Tony winner Reed Birney, Britney Coleman, Clifton Duncan, Marc Kudisch, Judy Kuhn, Tam Mutu, Nancy Opel, Douglas Sills, and Alexandra Socha. The Drowsy Chaperone star and creator Bob Martin narrate the evening, reprising his role of 'Man in Chair' (who happens to be an Encores! subscriber and has a few suggestions for their programming).
