Tony nominee Santino Fontana, who will play Michael Dorsey in the world premiere of the Broadway-bound musical Tootsie, heads the cast of the February 19 Project Shaw reading of Pygmalion at Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre.
Artistic Director David Staller directs a cast that also features Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart (Hamilton, Aladdin), Blair Brown (currently on Broadway in The Parisian Woman), Bill Army (Act One), Dan Domingues (The Undertaking), Midori Francis (The Wolves), Peter Francis James (Present Laughter, Stuff Happens), Patti Perkins (The Dead), Susannah Perkins (The Rape of the Sabine Women), and Jennifer Van Dyck (Dancing at Lughnasa, Two Shakespearean Actors).
Pygmalion, the basis for the musical My Fair Lady (returning to Broadway later this season), concerns Professor Henry Higgins, who makes a wager that he can train a Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador’s garden party.
“It’s no wonder this is almost always at the top of everyone’s favorite Shaw play list. It’s got everything a great play should have: a great premise, scintillating characters, laugh out loud humor, and at its core the vital heart of the human journey we all must go through toward connecting to ourselves. Its immortality was sealed with the meteor-like success of the musical, of course, and we’ve had an overwhelming number of requests to include it this year. This will give our friends a chance to experience the play without the songs before heading over to Lincoln Center," said Staller in an earlier statement.
Tickets are $35 and are available by calling (212) 864-5400 or online at SymphonySpace.org. Special reserved VIP seating is available for $50 by contacting the Gingold office (212) 355-7823 or [email protected].
