In his 60-year Broadway career, Jack O'Brien has directed plays, musicals, and operas, winning three Tony Awards and receiving a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award along the way. But even at 86 years old, it's never too late to make a career change.
O'Brien has reportedly signed on to become an actor in the much-anticipated third season of HBO's cult favorite series The Comeback, which is currently in production, per Variety. No word yet on O'Brien's character, nor that of fellow new cast members Tim Bagley, Matt Cook, and Ella Stiller. Returning from the series' first two seasons are Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish, Dan Bucatinsky as Billy Stanton, Laura Silverman as Jane Benson, and Damian Young as Mark Berman.
Created by Kudrow and showrunner Michael Patrick King, the series is a faux found footage-style mockumentary following an insecure actor as she attempts second, third (and beyond) career acts, including playing a supporting role on a three-camera sitcom and playing a fictionalized version of herself on an arty HBO series. The show is not made or released on a typical schedule, with its first season airing in 2005, and the second in 2014. A release date for the third season has not yet been announced.
Earlier seasons have also featured Broadway alum Maulik Pancholy and Nathan Lee Graham.
O'Brien's Tony Awards are for directing Hairspray, Henry IV, and The Coast of Utopia. He's also been at the helm of Broadway's The Roommate, Shucked, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Nance, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Full Monty, and lots more over his prolific career.
