Cerveris, who currently stars as Perón in the Broadway revival of Evita, retweeted a photo of himself in the Hedwig getup following his performance.
"Epic #Broadway moment: @Cerveris returns as Hedwig in surprise one night only appearance!" tweeted @Kimberly_Kaye. Cerveris retweeted and added, "Barracuda!"
"So, for all of you that missed my birthday celebration... Michael Cerveris performed as Hedwig for ME!!!" added Evita hairstylist Rick Caroto via Twitter. "Amazing! I feel loved."
The Tony winner took over for Hedwig star John Cameron Mitchell, who also wrote the musical's book, in 1998. In Hedwig, the title singer, an obscure and tortured German-American transsexual rock singer, tells her darkly comic story while ostensibly performing a concert.
Cerveris took home the Tony Award in 2004 for his performance in Assassins and was nominated for his performances in Evita, Lovemusick, Sweeney Todd and The Who's Tommy. He has also appeared on Broadway in In the Next Room, Hedda Gabler, Cymbeline and Titanic.
