Tony Awards Tony Awards Admin Committee Rules on Funny Girl, A Strange Loop, How I Learned to Drive, More

Broadway's biggest honors will be handed out June 12 at Radio City Music Hall.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met May 5, the third and final meeting for the season, to determine eligibility for Plaza SuiteParadise SquareTake Me OutBirthday CandlesAmerican BuffaloThe MinutesHow I Learned to Drivefor colored girls...HangmenFunny GirlThe Skin of Our TeethA Strange LoopPOTUSMr. Saturday Night, and Macbeth.

Notable among the decisions: How I Learned to Drive, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1997 and is currently playing its first-ever Broadway run, will be eligible in the Best Revival of a Play category. Similar rulings were issued earlier in the season for Lackawanna Blues and Trouble in Mind.

As announced earlier this year, the 75th Annual Tony Awards will return to its traditional summer time slot for the first time since 2019, with the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing setting the ceremony for June 12 at New York City's Radio City Music Hall. Nominations for the honors will be announced May 9.

Following last year's two-part broadcast shared by CBS and streamer Paramount+, the 2022 Tony Awards will include an hour of exclusive programming streaming on Paramount+ June 12 from 7 PM ET, followed by the three-hour main awards ceremony airing live on CBS and streaming simultaneously on Paramount+ (for premium-level subscribers only) from 8 PM ET, making this year's ceremony the first in Tony Awards history to be available live nationwide. The broadcast will also be available to stream on demand on Paramount+ for all membership tiers following the live stream.

The committee made the following show-specific determinations:

Joaquina Kalukango will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical category for her performance in Paradise Square.

Enrico Colantoni and John Earl Jelks will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play category for their respective performances in Birthday Candles.

Darren Criss will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play category for his performance in American Buffalo.

How I Learned to Drive will be considered eligible in the Best Revival of a Play category.

Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Leading Role in a Play categories for their respective performances in How I Learned to Drive.

Rachel Hauck and Lucy Mackinnon will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Play category for their work on How I Learned to Drive.

Myung Hee Cho and Aaron Rhyne will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Play category for their work on for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf.

David Threlfall will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play category for his performance in Hangmen.

Jane Lynch and Jared Grimes will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical categories for their respective performances in Funny Girl.

Ellenore Scott and Ayodele Casel will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Choreography category for their work on Funny Girl.

Gabby Beans, James Vincent Meredith, and Roslyn Ruff will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Leading Role in a Play categories, for their respective performances in The Skin of Our Teeth.

Jaquel Spivey will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical category for his performance in A Strange Loop.

Scott Pask and Jeff Sugg will be considered jointly eligible in the Best Scenic Design of a Musical category for their work on Mr. Saturday Night.

All other Tony eligibility for the productions discussed by the Admin Committee will be consistent with opening-night billing.

The awards will honor the 2021-2022 Broadway season, with productions opening between February 20, 2020 (one day following the retroactively determined cut-off eligibility date for last year's honors) and April 28, 2022, eligible for nominations. These latest eligibility determinations follow the committee's first meeting in December 2021, with decisions being made for Broadway's Girl from the North Country; Pass Over; Lackawanna Blues; Six; Chicken & Biscuits; Is This A Room; Thoughts of a Colored Man; The Lehman Trilogy; Dana H.; Caroline, or Change; Diana, The Musical; and Trouble in Mind, and a second meeting in March 2022, with decisions being made for Clyde's, Mrs. Doubtfire, Company, Flying Over Sunset, Skeleton Crew, MJ, and The Music Man.
