Cast of The Recipe

Casting and the creative team are set for La Jolla Playhouse's world premiere of Tony nominee Claudia Shear (Dirty Blonde)'s The Recipe, which will play the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre February 10-March 22.

Directed by Obie winner Lisa Peterson (An Iliad), the cast will feature Jill Abramovitz as Simca and others, two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz as Paul Child, Christina Kirk as Julia Child, Rami Margron as Madame Brassard and others, Michael Park as McWilliams and others, Ariel Shafir as Tom and others, and Saisha Talwar as Louise and others plus ensemble members Germainne Lebron, Torkan Omari, and Kenneth Ray; and understudies Jason Heil, Amanda Naughton, Drew Springer-Miller, and Jim Stanek.

Based on the book Dearie by Bob Spitz, The Recipe follows the early life of the late, famed cookbook author and TV personality Julia Child. "Directionless but driven, careening from Pasadena to New York to Washington D.C. to Ceylon and finally to Paris’s famed Cordon Bleu cooking school," press notes state, "she battled long odds, too-short sleeves, and her own self-doubt before finding both her calling and her true love, her husband, Paul Child."

The production will also have choreography by David Neumann, scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Linda Cho, lighting design by Ben Stanton, sound design and original music by André Pluess, dramaturgy by Edward Sobel, dialect coaching by Andrea Caban, and casting by Caparelliotis Casting's David Caparelliotis and Hannah Reinert. Dean Remington is the stage manager, and Alexa Burn is the assistant stage manager.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Claudia Shear several times throughout my career, and it is a joy to have her back at the Playhouse again with this delightfully witty new play,” said Artistic Director Christopher Ashley in a statement. “Featuring a stellar cast and creative team, The Recipe delves into Julia Child’s early life and the fascinating path she took to becoming the culinary icon we know today.”
