Finger Lakes New Works Festival is hosting an industry reading of The Girl Who Cried Different, a new musical inspired by the real story of Prince keyboardist Tommy Barbarella, January 13. Courtney Young Socher is directing.

The project features music by Barbarella, lyrics by Mariella Elm, and a book and additional lyrics by Lauren Kahane, telling the story of Barbarella, his daughter (lyricist Elm) and her hidden disability.

Jared Zirilli is leading the reading as Barbarella, with the cast also featuring Alexandra Champion, Lauren Duncanson, Raina Grabowski, Charles Holt, Nicholas Ismailoff, Leila Johnson, Daniel Mejil, Belén Moyono, Ebony Marshall-Oliver, Theo Pearson, Gabriella Rubacky, Jason SweetTooth Williams, Wendy Waring, Noa Webner, Corrinthea Washington, and Chryssie Whitehead. Casting is by Michael Cassara.

Benji Goldsmith is music directing. Grant Crowson serves as stage manager, with Riley Israel as assistant stage manager.
