From classical ballet to modern monodrama, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
American Ballet Theatre wraps up its 2025 summer season at the Metropolitan Opera House with a final week of Swan Lake, July 14-19. Kevin McKenzie’s production of Tchaikovsky's ballet, a staple of the company’s repertoire, celebrates its 25th year this season. The July 18 performance will also be the farewell performance of Gillian Murphy, the company’s longest-standing current dancer, concluding a 23-year stint as principal dancer with a final performance as Odette/Odile.
Teatro Grattacielo presents Mascagni's L'Amico Fritz July 19 and 20 at La MaMa. The composer's second opera, following the immensely popular Cavalleria Rusticana, L'Amico Fritz follows the romance between Fritz, a landowner, and Suzel, the daughter of one of his tenants, as they are brought together by the matchmaking machinations of David, the local Rabbi. Anna Laura Miszerak directs the production, which stars tenor Jeremy Brauner as Fritz, sopranos Kathleen Echols and Claire Tendl alternating in the role of Suzel, and baritone Suchan Kim as David. Andy Anderson conducts.
Teatro Grattacielo will also present two other performances this week: A concert of Neapolitan songs July 15; and, July 18, the world premiere of Generación Perdida, a monodrama by Jorge Sosa, based on the book by Mexican-Colombian poet Javier Moro Hernandez. Generación Perdida is conducted by Tianhui Ng, directed by Elena Araoz, and sung by mezzo-soprano Victoria Vargas.
American Modern Opera Company concludes its Run AMOC* festival with the echoing of tenses at Alice Tully Hall July 16. The song cycle by Anthony Cheung sets texts by seven Asian-American poets, who also perform their words live in the production. The cycle is performed by tenor Paul Appleby, Cheung on piano, and violinist Miranda Cuckson, who conceived the piece.
The Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center begins its summer season July 19 with a "Symphony of Choice" concert at David Geffen Hall. Conductor Jonathon Heyward will lead the orchestra in a program selected by the audience using a text-to-vote system during the concert.
The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Summer Evenings series continues this week with concerts July 15 and 19 at Alice Tully Hall. The former concert, featuring a piano quintet, will include works by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Frack. The latter concert, featuring a wind quintet, will include works by Mendelssohn, Schulhoff, Mozart, Dutilleux, and Beethoven.
The Mark Morris Dance Group kicks off its 45th anniversary season this week with a residency at the Joyce Theatre running July 15-26. The company will present two programs, each of which will feature a world premiere alongside classic works from the Mark Morris repertory.
