Pulitzer-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, whose new work Sally & Tom is currently running at The Public Theater, is bringing her band Sula & The Joyful Noise to the Off-Broadway company's cabaret space, Joe's Pub, for a one-night-only concert April 29.
The concert, which press notes describe as "an evening of booty-shaking, statement-making, and mind-melting music," will see the six-member ensemble revisiting some old tunes and trying out some new ones.
The performance will be Parks' first time back at Joe's Pub since premiering her work Plays for the Plague Year there in 2022 and 2023. The work was the culmination of a project that saw Parks writing one play a day throughout the COVID shutdown for an anthology of plays and songs. Parks co-starred in both runs.
Along with Parks, Sula & The Joyful Noise features music director Tony Jarvis, Eric Biondo on trumpet and vocals, Chris Eddelton on percussion, Christian Konopka on bass, and Yusuke Yamamoto on vibraphone and percussion. Find more information about the group at SulaandtheJoyfulNoise.com.
