The Tony winner appeared on the late night show to discuss why The Music Man inspired her to come back to Broadway.

Tony winner Sutton Foster visited The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon October 7, and host Fallon revealed a near miss in their career trajectories. Apparently Fallon auditioned to star in Young Frankenstein, which would have had him share the stage with Sutton Foster as Inga.

"The audition was at [Susan Stroman's] apartment in the city. ... She wants me to sing for her... so I go in, I go, 'Hey, nice to meet you. So I'll do "Puttin' on the..."' She goes, '"Puttin' on the Ritz?" Everyone knows that one. I want you to do this new song. Here's a pianist here. He'll walk you through it and you'll learn it. I'll give you like ten minutes to learn it, and then I'll come listen to you.' And I go, 'This is a nightmare.' It was the worst thing." Watch the full segment above.

Fallon then asked Foster to share her worst audition story, but Foster couldn't seem to summon one to her memory, causing the studio to erupt into laughter. Said Fallon "Well of course you wouldn't have a bad audition, you're Sutton Foster!"

Elsewhere in the interview, Foster shared why The Music Man inspired her to come back to Broadway after an eight-year absence, and the numerous ways in which their understudies have saved the day throughout the production's run.\

The Music Man revival will play at the Winter Garden Theatre through January 1, 2023.
