Broadway News Stephen Adly Guirgis' Dog Day Afternoon Finds a Broadway Home

Olivier winner Rupert Goold will direct the play, telling the true crime story that inspired the 1975 Oscar-winning film.

Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach

The previously announced Broadway bow of Stephen Adly Guirgis' Dog Day Afternoon has set dates and found a Broadway home.

The production will come to the August Wilson Theatre beginning March 10, 2026, opening March 30. The limited engagement will continue through June 28. Two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold will direct.

The true crime story, which previously inspired the 1975 film of the same name, centers on a 1972 Brooklyn bank robbery gone wrong that turns into a hostage situation.

Jon Bernthal (The BearWalking Dead) will play Sonny Amato to Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Fantastic FourThe Bear)'s Sal DeSilva, as previously announced.

Frank Pierson wrote the 1975 film, adapting P.F. Kluge's Life magazine article "The Boys in the Bank." Warner Bros., which released the film, is producing the upcoming stage play, though it doesn't appear to be a direct adaptation of Pierson's screenplay.

Additional casting and creatives are to be announced. Mark Kaufman, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, and Patrick Catullo are producing.

Pre-sale tickets will be available beginning October 16 at 10 AM ET with registration at DogDayAfternoonBroadway.com. General sales begin October 17 at 10 AM ET.
