Sold-Out Oresteia to Transfer to West End | Playbill

News Sold-Out Oresteia to Transfer to West End The sold-out production of Aeschylus' Oresteia, re-imagined for the modern stage by director/adaptor Robert Icke, is to transfer from the Almeida to the West End's Trafalgar Studios, beginning performances Aug. 22 prior to an official opening Sept. 7, for a limited run to Nov. 7.

The cast will original cast members Lorna Brown, Jessica Brown Findlay, Annie Firbank, Joshua Higgott, Luke Thompson, Lia Williams, Angus Wright and Hara Yannas.

In a press statement, Almeida artistic director Rupert Goold commented, "We are thrilled Oresteia is having a further life at the Trafalgar Studios with SFP and ATG. That a production of this ambition and intensity can find a commercial life is testament to the sheer modernity of the work and Robert Icke's breath-taking vision. At the Almeida audiences were absolutely riveted throughout the run and following on from Chimerica, 1984 and King Charles III, I believe the West End is in for another galvanising burst of exciting new work from the Almeida team."

This production originally opened at the Almeida in June 2015 as the first of three plays in the Almeida's Greeks season, which has continued with Bakkai, starring Ben Whishaw and Bertie Carvel (now running through Sept. 19), and will conclude with Medea, starring Kate Fleetwood (Sept. 25-Nov. 14).

The transfer of Oresteia is produced by Almeida Theatre, Sonia Friedman Productions and Ambassador Theatre Group.

The three plays collectively known as The Oresteia premiered in Athens in 458 BC as part of the annual Dionysia Festival, where they collectively won first prize. The original Oresteia is 2473 years old.
