Frida, The Musical

Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium hosts a special sneak peek at the developing Broadway-aimed Frida the Musical September 7 at 8 PM. The event is free and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis. The line will form at the Atrium’s entrance on Broadway, between 62nd and 63rd Street.

The concert will include select songs from the new musical, songs that fuse "Mexican folk music with a lush, contemporary sound," according to press notes. The musical, officially revealed to be in the works last month, features music by Jaime Lozano and lyrics by Obie-winning playwright Neena Beber. The project is a collaboration between the Kahlo family, BTF Media, and producer Valentina Berger.

The musical follows Frida on her journey from Mexico City to Paris to New York, and finally back home as she follows her passions. The creative team has been given access to exclusive material from Kahlo’s estate to craft the work. A workshop presentation is expected in 2023.

“We are deeply moved that this show will allow audiences around the world to get to know Frida as so much more than just an artist,” said Mara Romeo, universal heiress to the Frida Kahlo legacy, on behalf of the Kahlo family in an earlier statement. “Full of joy, ahead of her time, and steeped in the culture of Mexico, she was a woman driven by an unending passion for life. I hope that this show inspires women everywhere to have the courage to fight for their dreams.”
