Off-Broadway's Slam Frank has added two weeks to its sold-out run at Asylum NYC, and will now perform through November 16. The show's co-creator, Andrew Fox, will continue starring as The Director and Mr. Van Daan after joining the company this week, previously the final scheduled performances.
Written by Fox and Joel Sinensky, Slam Frank reimagines the story of Holocaust victim and diarist Anne Frank through, according to press notes, an "intersectional, multiethnic, genderqueer, Afro-latin hip-hop lens." The work—which follows a performatively progressive community theatre trying to decolonize Frank's diary, was inspired by a viral thread on Twitter asking the incendiary question, "Did Anne Frank ever acknowledge her white privilege?"
Fox succeeded John Anker Bow in the cast, which also includes Olivia Bernábe as Anita, Alex Lewis as Peter, Anya van Hoogstraten as Margot, Austen Horne as Edith, Rocky Paterra as Otto, Walker Stovall as Assistant Stage Manager, and Jaz Zepatos as Mrs. Van Daan. Understudies Kris Bramson, Peter Kendall, and Crystal Stewart round out the company.
The musical is directed by Sam LaFrage with Emily Abrams serving as associate director. The creative team also includes music director Alex Harrington, choreographer Nico DeJesus, assistant choreographer Arianna Meneses, costume designer Sarah Lockwood, set and prop designer CJ Howard, lighting and live video streaming designer Zach Lobel, and projection designer Nicholas Ferrari. Nikita Chernin is production stage manager.
