James Van Heusen, Sammy Cahn, and Peter Stone's 1965 musical Skyscraper will get a rare revival at Off-Broadway's UrbanStages via Regeneration Theatre and Combustion Collective, in association with Nelda Yaw Buckman. The work will play UrbanStages November 7-17.

The work features a book by Stone, adapted from Elmer Rice's play Dream Girl; music by Van Heusen; and lyrics by Cahn, centering on an antique shop owner navigating the realities of a rapidly urbanizing 1960s New York City. The musical played a 248-performance run in 1965, and was nominated for five 1966 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. But the title has scarcely, if ever, been seen since in a major production.

The upcoming revival will star Rachel Lauren James as Georgina Allerton, Travis Murad Leland as Tim Bushman, Brian C. Veith as Roger Summerhill, Jeff Raab as Bert Bushman, and Katryna Marttala as Stanley, along with ensemble members Jeff Gallup and Katherine Winter. Avital Asuleen is directing and choreographing. Additional casting and creative team members are to be announced.

“Reviving Skyscraper has been a dream of mine for a number of years,” says Regeneration Theatre lead producer Barnaby Edwards in a statement. “It has a swinging score by Van Heusen and Cahn, who were really the Sinatra house band in the '50s and '60s, and it’s an unabashed musical comedy that just exists to bring audiences joy. Combined with the themes of female empowerment, it’s a show that is just right for our present moment. We are also restoring two songs that were cut out of town that will delight musical theatre fans.”

The upcoming Off-Broadway revival is licensed by Concord Theatricals.
