The upcoming Off-Broadway bow of John Leguizamo's The Other Americans has found its complete cast, to be led by Leguizamo himself as previously announced. Performances begin September 11 at The Public Theater's Anspacher Theater, ahead of a September 25 opening night. The limited run will continue through October 12. Ruben Santiago-Hudson will direct.
Leguizamo will be starring as Nelson Castro, a Colombian-American laundromat owner in Queens grappling with a failing business and buried secrets. The cast will also feature Rosa Evangelina Arredondo as Norma, Sarah Nina Hayon as Veronica, Rebecca Jimenez as Toni, Trey Santiago-Hudson as Nick, Bradley James Tejeda as Eddie, and Luna Lauren Velez as Patti. Understudies Kimberli Flores, Jaime José Hernández, and Juan Francisco Villa will round out the company.
“So great to be back at the greatest theatre in America, with my new play developed by Oskar Eustis and Mandy Hackett!," says Leguizamo in a statement. "It’s about the American dream when it smacks into the American reality while being Latino. A laundromat mogul in '90s Queens has to confront his past as his son, who struggles with mental health issues, inadvertently undoes his web of lies." Leguizamo has a long history with the Public, including an early career turn as Puck in their A Midsummer Night's Green and the premiere bow of his 2018 solo show Latin History for Morons.
“The Other Americans is a beautifully written classic American drama," adds director Santiago-Hudson. "The Castro family are salt-of-the-earth hardworking people who made their way up from nothing and are trying to hold on to their share of the ‘American Dream.’ But most importantly it's about family—the good, the bad, and the ugly. It’s about the most sensitive and fragile parts of family, but also the most powerful and joyous parts. I cannot wait to share John Leguizamo's extraordinary new play with The Public Theater's wonderfully diverse audience."
The Public production is being presented in association with Washington, D.C.'s Arena Stage, where the piece premiered. The complete cast (with the exception of Flores and Hernández) are reprising their performances from that run.
The production will feature scenic design by Arnulfo Maldonado, costume design by Kara Harmon, lighting design by Jen Schriever, sound design by Justin Ellington, hair and wig design by Anika Seitu, prop management by Natalie Carney, fight direction by Thomas Schall, choreography by Lorna Ventura, and dramaturgy by Jack Phillips Moore. James Latus will serve as production stage manager with Ana Muñoz as stage manager.
