Billy Porter didn't have to look far for his background singers on That's My Jam's Musical Genre Challenge; musical legend Patti LaBelle leapt into the fray to support him in this exclusive clip from the upcoming March 14 episode. Watch above.
The show, a spin off of The Tonight Show, is an hour-long variety program where celebrities compete in a series of music, dance, and trivia based games to raise money for the charity of their choice. Tony and Emmy winner Billy Porter participated in Musical Genre Challenge, one of the flagship games of the show, where performing artists are given a popular song to cover in an unexpected genre style.
The pull of the microphone lever gives Porter "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)" by Kelly Clarkson, to be covered in a Gospel style. Porter, known for his soul- and gospel–inspired solo albums, smiles as he took position, stating "you know, Gospel is my wheelhouse." As host Jimmy Fallon and Porter's fellow celebrities Sarah Hyland and Darren Criss watch on in awe, LaBelle joins in, grabbing her microphone to back up Porter's vocals.
LaBelle is known as the Godmother of Soul, and one of the best selling vocalists of all time. Together, the pair brought the audience to their feet, with Darren Criss lying prostrate in a bow by the end of the song.
Porter is about to head on tour, with Black Mona Lisa Tour: Volume 1 expected to visit 25 cities throughout the United States. For more information, including ticket access, go here.
That's My Jam airs Tuesdays at 10 PM. To catch the full episode of Porter, LaBelle, Criss, and Hyland, and to see who will win the pay day for their charity of choice, tune in March 14.
