For the first time in its 35-year history, Jane Wagner’s iconic monologue play, The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, is being performed with a company of 12 actors at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. The playwright wrote the play in 1971 for her wife, Tony-winning actress Lily Tomlin, who took it to Broadway in 1985, and again in 2000.
Tomlin embodied an array of characters in Wagner’s comedic look at and critique of American society. The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe: Revisited features a cast made up of Julia Aks, Charlotte Gulezian, Joe Hart, Julanne Chidi Hill, Kristina Johnson, Kimberly Jürgen, Bellina Logan, Jeremy Luke, Ann Noble, Sasha Pasternak, Anny Rosario and Rachel Sorsa.
Directed by Ken Sawyer, the show began performances October 6 and will officially open October 15. The engagement is scheduled to run through November 20. The production features original music by Anna Waronker and Charlotte Caffey.
