Symphony Space will present a star-studded staged reading of Moss Hart’s satire Light Up the Sky December 16.
The one-night-only event continues Symphony Space's At Play series, which invites actors, playwrights, and artists to imagine, create, and play. Conceived and cast by Tony winner Santino Fontana (who, notably, portrayed Hart in the 2014 Broadway play Act One, adapted from Hart's memoir of the same name), the evening will bring Hart's fast-paced comedy about the first-night jitters of a theatrical tryout to life more than 75 years after it first premiered.
Light Up the Sky reunites Fontana (Tootsie, Hello, Dolly!) with Golden Globe, Tony, and five-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub (The Band’s Visit, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Monk) and Emmy and two-time Tony winner Andrea Martin (Noises Off, Pippin), after the three performed together in the Broadway premiere of James Lapine’s Act One.
Said Fontana, “Tony, Andrea, and I were performing in Act One at Lincoln Center when Moss Hart’s son Chris suggested that we do Light Up the Sky, and the idea has been percolating ever since. The At Play series offers exactly the kind of playful, communal spirit that makes actors happiest—working together, rediscovering great writing, and sharing it live with an audience. After the joy of reading David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre with BD Wong last spring, I knew I wanted to return for another one-night-only adventure.”
The trio will be joined by Jelani Alladin (Frozen), Tony winner Annaleigh Ashford (Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George), Daniel Breaker (Hamilton, Shrek the Musical), Deborah S. Craig (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), and Tony winner Harriet Harris (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Cinderella).
