The musical, which features such King hits as "Natural Woman," "Chains," "Crying in the Rain" and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?," features a book by Douglas McGrath, who wrote the screenplays for "Emma" and "Bullets over Broadway."
Natural Woman, according to the New York daily, explores the life and career of King, including her marriage to and ultimate divorce from Gerry Goffin. Much of the action of the musical is set in the Brill Building and 1650 Broadway.
In 2006 Variety reported that Tony Award winner Michael Blakemore directed an earlier reading of the musical, which featured the talents of Tom Wopat and Randy Graff. No director is currently attached to the project.
King's daughter, Sherry Goffin Kondor, is overseeing the project, according to the Post.
