The National Theatre production of the new play The Prisoner opened September 17 at the Dorfman Theatre. Written and directed by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne, the play features Hiran Abeysekera, Hervé Goffings, Omar Silva, Kalieaswari Srinivasan, Donald Sumpter.
The Prisoner follows Masuvo (Abeysekera), a young man who has committed an unspeakable crime; his punishment is to sit outside a prison for 20 years without moving and contemplate his deed. He's a prisoner, though not technically incarcerated behind bars, and must refuse all gestures of help from passersby.
Peter Brook is a veteran director who has won multiple Tony and Emmy awards, as well as an Olivier, among many other accolades. He has collaborated on multiple projects with longtime co-writer and co-director Estienne.
