SNL star Rachel Dratch dropped by Late Night with Seth Meyers March 28 to talk about her upcoming Broadway debut in POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, in which Dratch will star alongside Lilli Cooper, Lea DeLaria, Julianne Hough, Suzy Nakamura, Julie White, and Vanessa Williams.
The chat (above) starts with a discussion of Dratch's stage roots, which include a high school performance as Amaryllis in The Music Man, complete with a production photo. And, it turns out, she has seen the current Broadway revival, and it sounds like Dratch made it a somewhat participatory experience.
"When you go to a show that you were in, then you're like singing along in your seat, much to the chagrin of your seat mates."
After sharing her son's savage review of a production of Fiddler on the Roof ("It was boring and sad and boring"), Dratch covered whether or not he'll get to see Mom in POTUS. Apparently, the work is not very kid friendly.
"This show has a lot of salty language in it. He's heard a lot of bad words, but I don't know that I want to introduce him to new bad words."
Dratch also shares what we can expect from her performance.
"The character I play is really fun because I start out as someone who's very buttoned up and apologetic. I can really relate to that, being like, 'Oh my God, did I do this right?,' and that kind of thing. But then the character goes on a journey and I get to do a lot of crazy things. If you like me as an actor, you'll really like this show. And then if you don't like me, there's a lot of other ladies there you might be fans of."
POTUS, which will give 28-year-old playwright Selina Fillinger her Broadway debut, starts at Broadway's Shubert Theatre April 14, with an opening set for April 27. Tony winner Susan Stroman directs.
