Libby's play explores the darkest ambitions of Silicon Valley, centering on a young programmer who learns his algorithm is the centerpiece of a massive AI surveillance project. The work premiered as a digital offering via Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in 2021, making a live stage debut at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in 2024.

“When we first discovered Matthew Libby’s thrilling new play Data, we were immediately struck by how powerfully it speaks to our current moment,” said producers Jeffrey Richards, Ira Pittelman, SAMS Entertainment, Maia Kayla Glasman, Frank Monier, Melissa and Bradford Coolidge, Carl Moellenberg, Patrick W. Jones, and Brandon J. Schwartz in an earlier joint statement. “It’s an innovative, fast-paced play exploring the tension between technology and morality. With an extraordinary cast bringing these characters to life, we’re excited to share this prescient and gripping work with audiences at the Lortel Theatre this winter.”

The production also features set design by Marsha Ginsberg, costume design by Enver Chakartash, lighting design by Amith Chandrashaker, and original music and sound design by Daniel Kluger. Ashley-Rose Galligan serves as production stage manager, and Edward Sobel is the dramaturg.
