Kansas City Repertory Theatre has cast Mariand Torres in the title role of the Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice rock opera Evita. Torres performed songs from the production in the Broadway-aimed Harold Prince musical Prince of Broadway.
Evita runs September 2-October 2 under the direction of Eric Rosen.
The cast will also feature Nick Duckart as Juan Perón, Tim Scott as Magaldi and Emily Shackelford as Mistress, with chorus members Keely Bierne, Kimberly Immanuel, Abdur Rahim Jackson, Nikko Kimzin and Tony Pulford.
Casting for the role of Che Guevera will be announced shortly.
Evita will have choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie. The creative team also includes Anthony T. Edwards (music director), Jack Magaw (set design), Jeffrey Cady (lighting design), Lindsay W. Davis (costume design), Alex Hawthorn (sound design) and Jason H. Thompson (projections design). Calyn P. Swain is production stage manager.
“This production is about framing the conversation during this election year about who we are and what are we becoming,” Rosen said in a statement. “Evita is about a woman who came from nowhere and through her political will and genius, brought about revolution still being felt today. This production could not be more timely as we watch American politics being redefined in historic measure.”
