The new J.R.R. Tolkien-inspired show, which was recently announced to have a London production, was nominated for 15 Doras in the General Theatre division of the 17th annual awards.
The Doras are split into several divisions to accommodate different sized productions and troupe's with distinct goals — General Theatre Division, Independent Theatre Division, Opera Division, Dance Division and Theatre for Young Audiences Division.
Recipients were announced at the Winter Garden Theatre.
Lord of the Rings, currently playing at the Princess of Wales Theatre, won Doras for Outstanding New Musical (award to writers Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus), Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Matthew Warchus), Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role (Michael Therriault, as Gollum, in Lord of the Rings), Outstanding Costume Design (Rob Howell), Outstanding Lighting Design (Paul Pyant) and Outstanding Choreography in a Play or Musical (Peter Darling).
The winner of Outstanding New Play in the General Theatre division was blood.claat – one womban's story by d'bi.young (the writer also won in the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role). In the Independent Theatre division, Birdland Theatre's The Last Days of Judas Iscariot won five Doras, and Bombay Black by Anosh Irani won four Doras, including Outstanding New Play or New Musical.
Director Jennifer Tarver was presented with the 2006 Pauline McGibbon Award. She is the founder and artistic director of Theatre Extasis for which she directed the Dora-winning That Time as well as the Dora-nominated History Plays and Not Faust. Each year a jury of theatre professionals presents this award to an emerging theatre artist in Ontario who has displayed a unique talent.
The Silver Ticket Award was awarded to director, poet, performer and "creator extraordinaire," ahdri zhina mandiela. Founder and artistic director of b current as well as the founder and driving force behind the much-buzzed annual rock.paper.sistahz, "Mandiela has been a formidable presence in the Canadian arts scene since the late '70s." The Silver Ticket is bestowed upon an individual "who has excelled in their own career while also nurturing the development of Canadian theatre."
The inaugural Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production, facilitated and sponsored by NOW Magazine, went to BoyGroove, produced by Michael Rubinoff & Derrick Chua in association with BoyGroove Entertainment Inc.
