Playwright Edward Graczyk passed away February 11 after an extended illness. He was 84 years old. The news was confirmed by Graczyk's agent, Charles Kopelman.

Mr. Graczyk cut his teeth writing children's theatre throughout the American Midwest, but it was a decidedly adult theatrical offering that would define his legacy. Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean premiered in 1976 at the Players Theatre in Columbus, Ohio, where Mr. Graczyk served as artistic director. The play, which centers on an all-female James Dean fan club that meets at a five-and-dime store in Texas 20 years after Dean's untimely death, travelled the country in regional repertory throughout the back half of the 1970s before reaching Broadway in 1982.

The Broadway production, directed by Robert Altman, famously starred future Oscar winner Kathy Bates and international superstar Cher (in her only Broadway performance credit). Altman's version was not particularly well received on stage, but a film adaptation was produced all the same, with the entirety of the Broadway cast reprising their roles. The film was notably more embraced by critics, with Cher receiving a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. A musical based on the work had its world premiere in 2025 at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.

Following Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Mr. Graczyk wrote a number of other adult-oriented works, although none would reach the same level of commercial success. His body of work also includes A Murder of Crows and Keith Carradine solo show My Time Ain't Long. His final play, The Blue Moon Dancing, premiered in Dallas in 2010.

Mr. Graczyk is survived by his sister, Shirley, and his partner of many years, Jeffrey Billiel. Information on a public memorial is not currently available.
