Acting teacher Terry Schreiber died April 3. He was 89 years old. The news was confirmed by the T. Schreiber Studio for Theatre and Film.
Mr. Schreiber was the founder of the Schreiber Studio, which began in 1969 as one of the originating producers of the Off-Off Broadway movement. A student of famed acting teachers Uta Hagen and Michael Howard, Mr. Schreiber continued their traditions through his own studio, rooting performers in extensive observation rather than over-intellectualizing their emotional approach.
On Broadway, Mr. Schreiber directed The Trip Back Down starring John Cullum, Devour the Snow, and the Tony nominated production of Patrick Meyer's play K2. He performed on Broadway in 1963's Andorra. Off-Broadway he directed widely, with some of his favorite credits including Desire Under the Elms at Roundabout and Feedlot at Circle Repertory with Jeff Daniels.
The T. Schreiber Studio, which remains in operation, was led by Mr. Schreiber until 2022, at which point he stepped away from formal teaching and direction. He is survived by his daughter Katherine and his former spouse, Sally Dunn. His memorial will be announced at a later date.
