How to Broadway-size Your Next Party or Event with PLAYBILLDER
This week's Spotlight is Kolbe Catholic College of Rockingham, Western Australia, and their production of Just Another High School Play. This hilarious metatheatrical comedy follows a stage manager and an assistant director as they scramble to ensure their show will go on after their drama teacher flees to Mexico for a more care-free life. With parts for up to 40 students, the maddening and magical play features rubber chickens, Shakespeare, interpretive dancing, and glitter.
Teacher Katie Sullivan shared with Playbill how students build confidence through theatre and in what ways teachers are balancing the tradition of performance with innovation.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. How many years have you been teaching?
Katie Sullivan: I have been teaching for over 25 years.
Can you share a little bit about the value you see in having a performing arts program in schools?
Kolbe College’s performing arts program offers students rich opportunities in dance, drama, and music, welcoming all skill levels and backgrounds. Through public performances, group activities, excursions, and ensemble work, students build confidence, creativity, and strong community connections while sharing their talents in a fun, inclusive environment. The program also fosters links with the wider community, including performances at local venues and outreach events, supporting both artistic and personal growth for every participant.
What are the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of teaching the performing arts to today’s students?
Teaching performing arts to today’s students is challenging due to limited resources, evolving technology, and the need to balance tradition with innovation, while also addressing student wellbeing and diverse learning needs. However, the rewards are immense—educators witness students transform as they gain confidence, creativity, and empathy, and see the arts become a safe space for expression, teamwork, and personal growth, making a lasting impact on their lives and futures.
Tell us a little bit about the production. What made you pick the show?
Choosing Just Another High School Play for Kolbe College was about giving students a chance to celebrate the fun, chaos, and teamwork that comes with putting on a production that pokes fun at school theatre itself.
What are kids loving about the show?
Students are loving the energetic pace, playful characters, and the freedom to showcase their comic timing and improvisation skills.
What message do you have for your students as they take the stage?
As the cast takes the stage, the message is simple: trust each other, enjoy every moment, and know that the entire Kolbe community is cheering for the courage, creativity, and laughter they bring to our stage. Shine bright.
