Last season's jazz-infused reimagining of Gilbert and Sullivan, Pirates! The Penzance Musical, will be licensed by Theatrical Rights Worldwide.

Adapted from the operetta masters' The Pirates of Penzance, the work features a book by Tony winner Rupert Holmes, shifting the action to the legendary port city New Orleans. While Sullivan's score remains mostly intact, a new set of orchestrations with Caribbean and French Quarter influences were written by Joseph Joubert and Daryl Waters, also interpolating some Gilbert and Sullivan tunes from other works. The adaptation is the latest in a long list of reimaginings of the classic operetta.

“The magic tale of Pirates! has never been more expertly crafted than in this magical reshaping of the beloved characters and songs by Rupert Holmes," says TRW CEO Steve Spiegel in a statement. "Ideal for all schools, community, and professional theatres, this version will bring joy to actors and audiences alike.”

This version debuted on Broadway via Roundabout Theatre Company last season, in a production directed by Scott Ellis and starring Jinkx Monsoon, Ramin Karimloo, David Hyde Pierce, and Nicholas Barasch. The staging was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical at the 2025 Tony Awards.
