El Niño, a nativity opera-oratorio by composer John Adams, opens at the Metropolitan Opera April 23, directed by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz (The Skin of Our Teeth), making her Met debut. Get a first look at the production below.
With a libretto derived from the King James Bible, assorted biblical apocrypha, and secular texts in English, Spanish, and Latin, El Niño tells the story of the nativity. Grammy award–winning soprano Julia Bullock makes her Met debut, leading a cast which also includes mezzo-soprano J'Nai Bridges, baritone Davóne Tines, and countertenors Key'mon W. Murrah, Siman Chung, and Eric Jurenas. Marin Alsop is conducting.
Lileana Blain-Cruz leads a team which includes scenic designer Adam Rigg, costume designer Montana Levi Blanco, lighting designer Yi Zhau, projection designer Hannah Wasileski, sound designer Mark Grey, puppet designer James Ortiz, and choreographer Marjani Forté-Saunders.
