The champagne poured and the zingers zinged November 2 as Drew Droege's new Off-Broadway comedy Messy White Gays celebrated opening night at The Duke on 42nd Street. Some notable messy white gays (plus allies/nemeses, of course) showed up to mark the occasion, including Cheyenne Jackson, Jessica Vosk, Jeff Hiller, Michael Urie, Dana Delaney, and more. Take a look in the photo gallery below.
In the farce, boyfriends Brecken and Caden have just murdered their throuple mate and stashed his corpse in a Jonathan Adler credenza, and the gays have just arrived for brunch. Hilarity and dirty jokes ensue. Mike Donahue is directing. See what critics had to say here.
Droege is also starring in the premiere, opposite Derek Chadwick (The Sex Lives of College Girls), James Cusati-Moyer (Slave Play), Aaron Jackson (Dicks: The Musical), and Pete Zias (Total Trash Live!). Understudies Drew Reilly and Matt Steele round out the company. Casting is by Ryan Bernard Tymensky of RBT Casting.
The production features set design by Alexander Dodge, costume design by James + AC, lighting design by Jen Schriever, sound design by Sinan Refik Zafar, props by Brendan McCann, puppetry by Sam Hill, and special effects by Jeremy Chernick. General management is provided by Sing Out, Louise! Productions, with production management by Libby J’Vera and Michal V. Mendelson as production stage manager.
The play was previously developed with a public reading at Soho Playhouse and a developmental staging at Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College, both in 2024.
The Fabulous Invalid (Jamie DuMont and Rob Russo), Tom D'Angora, and Michael D'Angora are producing with co-producers Willette and Manny Klausner, DT3 Productions, Stephanie Courtney and Scott Kolanach, Rebecca Gold, Zac Petkanas and B. Levi Bohanan, Red Spear Productions, Russo Famiglia, Angelina Santarelli, Marco Santarelli, Nelini Stamp, Emma Taylor, Andrew Tobias, and Wolk Transfer Company.
