The Broadway company of the hit Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus musical Mamma Mia!, which opened Oct. 18, 2001, marked its 10th anniversary Oct. 18, 2011 with a performance and celebration that included a proclamation from Mayor Bloomberg and a fireworks show.
The musical recently celebrated another milestone when it became the 10th longest-running show in Broadway history following the evening performance Sept. 14; it surpassed the record previously held by Miss Saigon (4,097 performances).
The current cast is led by Liana Hunt as Sophie Sheridan, Catherine Ricafort as Ali, Halle Morse as Lisa, Judy McLane as Tanya, Jennifer Perry as Rosie, Lisa Brescia as Donna Sheridan, Jordan Dean as Sky, Jacob Pinion as Pepper, Andrew Chappelle as Eddie, David Beach as Harry Bright, Patrick Boll as Bill Austin, John Hemphill as Sam Carmichael and Bryan Scott Johnson as Father Alexandrios.
Mamma Mia! employs the hit songs of famed pop group ABBA to tell the story of Sophie Sheridan, a young girl who hopes to discover the identity of her father. On the eve of her wedding, she brings three men from her mother Donna's past back to the Greek island they visited over two decades ago.
Mamma Mia! features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, a book by Catherine Johnson, direction by Phyllida Lloyd and choreography by Anthony Van Laast.
The musical was a hit in London, where it still plays, before arriving on Broadway. The production also spawned a hit film starring Oscar winner Meryl Streep.
The Winter Garden Theatre is located in Manhattan at 1634 Broadway. For more information visit www.mamma-mia.com.
