Originally commissioned by NBC in 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera written for television. It premiered in a live telecast on Christmas eve, 1951, and had repeat performances for several years following. The family Christmas opera, with an original libretto by the composer, tells the story of a young boy named Amahl whose house is visited by three kings on their way to Bethlehem.
