On her official website, the former star of Evita and Anything Goes writes, "I'll be back on stage in February, I think. I've been offered La Mome Pistache in Encores! production of Can-Can." Encores! will present the Cole Porter musical in February 2004. This would mark LuPone's second appearance in the acclaimed concert series; she previously played Vera Simpson in Pal Joey. A Tony Award winner for her work in Evita, Patti LuPone also earned an Olivier Award for her performances in the West End productions of Lés Misérables and The Cradle Will Rock. Her other theatrical credits include Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Oliver!, Working, The Old Neighborhood, Master Class and Pal Joey. LuPone also headlined two solo concerts, Patti LuPone On Broadway and Matters of the Heart, and received glowing notices for her performance as Mrs. Lovett in the Lincoln Center concert version of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd.
Can-Can kicks off the new Encores! season, Feb. 12-14, 2004. The Cole Porter musical originally debuted at the Shubert Theatre in May 1953, where it played 892 performances before closing in June 1955. Gwen Verdon was among the original cast of the musical, which featured such Porter tunes as "I Am in Love," "Allez-Vous-En, Go Away," "C'est Magnifique," "I Love Paris" and the title tune.
