The Movement Theatre Company has revealed the recipients of two new commissions: the Ladder Commission (in partnership with The Black List) and the newly launched Jody Falco and Jeffrey Steinman Commission.
In partnership with The Black List, Ankita Raturi will receive the joint Ladder Commission, giving Raturi $10,000 to create and develop a new play alongside The Movement's artistic team that will culminate in a workshop next year.
The finalist for The Ladder commission is Aditi Pradhan. The semi-finalists are Diane Exavier, Jesse Jae Hoon, Utkarsh Rajawat, Nathan Yungerberg, Azudi Onyejekwe, T.J.L, Mariam Bazeed, Jaymes Sanchez, Leonardo Gonzalez Dominguez, Russell Nichols, Cris Eli Blak, Hera Anderson, Liz Morgan, and Sandra A. Daley-Sharif.
Carolina Đỗ will receive the inaugural Jody Falco and Jeffrey Steinman Commission, giving $5,000 to write and develop a new play with the support of The Movements' artistic team.
The Black List, which has surveyed Hollywood screenplays since 2005, began expanding into theatre last January and has launched four playwriting commissions. The Movement Theatre Company's producing artistic leadership team comprises Deadria Harrington, Eric Lockley, Ryan Dobrin, and David Mendizábal. It focuses on developing and producing new works by artists of color.
The Movement Theatre Company also recently received a $300K grant from the Mellon Foundation, which will strengthen and expand their leadership capacity over the next two years.
