The Tony-winning production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, which opened July 25, 2019, will play its final performance on Broadway July 26 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. At the time of closing, the hit musical will have played 2,265 regular performances and 24 previews, and will be the 36th longest-running show in Broadway history.

Moulin Rouge!, based on the 2001 film, opened on Broadway in 2019 following a Boston tryout. The musical was subsequently nominated for 14 Tony Awards in 2020, winning 10, including Best Musical. It holds the record for the highest-grossing production in the 100-year history of the Hirschfeld.

The musical officially recouped its Broadway investment in late 2022 and is the only show that opened that season that is still running. Like all of Broadway, the production halted performances March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was subsequently one of the key shows to lead the reopening of Broadway the following year, resuming performances September 24, 2021.

Producer Carmen Pavlovic of Global Creatures said in a statement, “It’s truly been the honor of a lifetime bringing this exceptional show to Broadway. We couldn’t have done it without Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s trust in allowing us to adapt their iconic film for the stage and for their creative guidance and generosity throughout. Alex Timbers’ vision and leadership, along with the passion and artistry of our entire creative team, has been unmatched. We’ve always said that Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a celebration of Broadway and of the artists who, against all odds, make it possible. We look forward to six more months of celebrating the remarkable people who created this show and those who perform eight times a week. And before we take our final bow, we have more exciting announcements that we can’t wait to reveal. See you at the Moulin Rouge, Chickens!”

The original Broadway company was led by Tony winners Aaron Tveit and KO (formerly Karen Olivo) as poet Christian and courtesan Satine, respectively, taking on the star-crossed roles played on screen by Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman in the Luhrmann movie musical. The original cast also included Tony winner Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler, Sahr Ngaujah as Toulouse-Lautrec, Tam Mutu as The Duke of Monroth, Ricky Rojas as Santiago, and Robyn Hurder as Nini.

The current Broadway cast includes Bob the Drag Queen as Harold Zidler, Christian Douglas as Christian, Meg Donnelly as Satine, André Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, David Harris as The Duke of Monroth, Rojas back in the role of Santiago, Samantha Dodemaide as Nini Hailee, and Arianna Rosario as the Satine Alternate.

The production is directed by Alex Timbers with a book by John Logan (based on the Baz Luhrmann-directed movie of the same name) and choreography by Sonya Tayeh. The score features covers of "Firework" by Katy Perry, "Your Song" by Elton John, and "Chandelier" by Sia, among many other modern pop songs. The story takes place at Paris' famed Moulin Rouge and follows the tragic love story between performer Satine and composer Christian.

The production's music team includes musical supervisor Justin Levine, music producer Matt Stine, and music director Andrew Graham. Orchestrations are by Levine, Stine, Katie Kresek, and Charlie Rosen, with dance arrangements by Levine and Stine.

Also on the creative team are scenic designer Derek McLane, costume designer Catherine Zuber, lighting designer Justin Townsend, sound designer Peter Hylenski, hair designer David Brian Brown, and makeup designer Sarah Cimino, with creative services by Luhrmann and Catherine Martin. Casting is by Jim Carnahan and Stephen Kopel. Star casting is by Whitley Theatrical.
