Mkhululi Mabija and Paul Castles' The Call will be presented as a workshop presentation via Rattlestick Theater and StoryBridge Productions. Andrea Ambam will direct the new queer African musical, which will be staged at the BAM Attic Space February 8 at 7 PM and February 13 and 15 at 2 PM.
Rooted in Shakespeare’s The Tempest and reimagined through South African history and queer lived experience, The Call uses African drag as a dramaturgical engine to shape the narrative, conjure spectacle, and celebrate the brilliance of marginalized communities. Rather than focusing solely on harm or exile, The Call foregrounds the color, creativity, and resilience of queer life on the African continent. Nonku Phiri is music directing.
The cast will include Brennyn Lark (Six), Janelle McDermoth (A Bronx Tale), Tiffany McLarty, Folake Olowofoyeku, Adesola Osakalumi, Deon ReleFord-Lee (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical), and Laughton Royce.
Story Bridge Productions produced a workshop of the piece in Cape Town, South Africa in 2025, and is aiming for a future run at Cape Town's Artscape Theatre.
