Tony winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) will direct Rob Roth's Warhol Capote, the first production of The American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) at Harvard University's 2017–2018 season.
The world premiere will begin performances in September at the Loeb Drama Center, located at 64 Brattle St., Cambridge.
In the late 1970s, “Truman Capote and Andy Warhol decided that they were destined to create a Broadway play together,” according to production notes. “Over the course of the next several months, they would sit down to record a series of intimate, wide-ranging conversations. The play never came to be, and the hours and hours of tape were lost to the ages. Until now.”
Roth, who discovered the recordings in the late 2000s, unveils the content of the tapes in Warhol Capote; in fact, every word spoken in the play comes from the mouths of Warhol and Capote.
