News Michael John LaChiusa Musical Gets NYC Workshop with Carolee Carmello Today A revised version of Los Otros receives a November 4 workshop in New York City.

Los Otros, the new musical by Tony Award nominee Michael John LaChiusa (music) and Ellen Fitzhugh (book and lyrics), receives a November 4 workshop presentation in New York City with Tony Award nominee Carolee Carmello and Joseph Melendez among the cast.

The private industry workshop is directed by Noah Himmelstein, with musical direction by Jon Kalbfleisch. Los Otros was originally commissioned by the Center Theatre Group, where it had its premiere in 2012.

Carmello (Parade, Tuck Everlasting) plays Lillian. Melendez, who appeared in the original CTG production, plays Carlos.

The workshop reflects a revised version of the musical that will receive a full staging at Baltimore’s Everyman Theatre March 22-April 23, 2017. Everyman commissioned the latest version of the musical. Himmelstein is the theatre’s associate artistic director.

According to Everyman, Los Otros “follows the stories of Lillian and Carlos, two Californians, one white and one Latino, who find their lives linked in unexpected ways. Told through three significant moments in their lives, the beautiful and intimate score captures the richness of each decade as they rise to face the preconceptions of what it means to be ‘the other.’”
