The awards to Matilda represent the largest number of wins by a single production in Olivier history; the closest to it previously was six for Nicholas Nickleby, coincidentally also an RSC production, in 1980.

Other major performance awards were won by Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller (joint winners of the Best Actor award for the roles they alternated in the National's Frankenstein of the title character and the creature), Ruth Wilson (Best Actress for the title role in the Donmar Warehouse's Anna Christie), Sheridan Smith (Best Performance in a Supporting Role for Flare Path, consolidating her reputation after last year winning the  Best Actress in a Musical award for Legally Blonde) and Nigel Harman  (Best Performance in a Supporting Role in a musical for Shrek - the Musical, in which he played Lord Farquaad).

One Man, Two Guvnors, now also running on Broadway, went away empty-handed; the award for Best Play went instead to John Hodge's Collaborators, originally seen at the National's Cottesloe and returning to the repertoire there from April 30 to the larger Olivier Theatre.

Olivier Special Awards were granted to Sir Tim Rice and the Royal Ballet's Dame Monica Mason, with special tributes including performances by Maria Friedman, Siobhan McCarthy, Elaine Paige and the cast of The Lion King for Rice; and a performance by the Royal Ballet from Wayne McGregor's Limen for Mason.
