The first-ever Marvelous Wonderettes premiered back in 1999 at Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. Since then, creator Roger Bean has turned the Wonderettes into a series, and the latest installment, The Marvelous Wonderettes: Dream On, premieres July 28 at Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, TX. This world premiere runs through September 18.
Stages also produced Winter Wonderettes in 2011 and 2012 and The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns in 2013.
Director/choreographer Melissa Rain Anderson leads the cast, which includes Rachel Logue, Chelsea Ryan McCurdy, Christina Stroup and Holland Varva. The production includes properties design by Jodi Bobrovsky, lighting design by Michael Clark, scenic design by Liz Freese, costume design by Tiffani Fuller and sound design by Michael Mullins.
The Marvelous Wonderettes, currently still playing Off-Broadway at the Kirk Theatre at Theatre Row, uses pop songs of the ’50s and ’60s to pay tribute to high school Songleader squads of the ’60s. Songs include favorites like “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid” and “It’s My Party.” In this sequel, the Wonderettes are throwing a retirement party for their homeroom teacher, but as time goes on, one of the singers must choose between fame and friends.
