Playbill's podcast is back! The latest episode of The Playbill Podcast: A Show On Broadway digs into the Breaking the Binary Festival, being held in NYC this week. The fourth annual event celebrates and presents work created and developed by transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit+ (TNB2S+) theatre artists.
To mark this year's festival, we collected artists for a roundtable discussion, including L Morgan Lee, Sis Thee Doll, Samora la Perdida, and Cheeyang Ng, with Breaking the Binary Theatre Founding Artistic Director George Strus moderating.
The episode is now available anywhere you get your podcasts, including Apple Podcasts and Spotify. You can also listen below.
The festival opens October 20 with a one-night-only concert of The Drowsy Chaperone at Carnegie Hall, featuring a star-studded all-trans and non-binary cast led by Laverne Cox, Alex Newell, Betty Who, Jonathan Van Ness, Dylan Mulvaney, and more. All net proceeds will benefit Trans Lifeline, Black Trans Liberation, and Breaking the Binary Theatre.
The Festival will continue at Open Jar Studios October 21-October 25, with 10 readings of five new plays. The festival will then conclude at The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center October 26, with the organization’s annual commissioning project with partners Concord Theatricals.
“The two most common questions anyone at Playbill gets from friends or family are: 'What's on Broadway? And what should I see?,'" says Playbill Chief Operating Officer and Vice President (and usual podcast host) Alex Birsh of the inspiration behind the new podcast. "The Playbill Podcast is here to help. Whether you’re a Broadway veteran or just starting to explore, we'll bring you the magic of Broadway, one show at a time.”
Along with Birsh and stars from each spotlighted show, episodes feature conversations with Playbill's resident theatre experts, aka the staffers that spend all their days writing and working on theatre and most nights seeing shows. The Playbill Podcast connects listeners with the savvy and fun theatre fans you've been looking for, whether it's to help you find your next ticket to buy or just give you a place to geek out about your favorite show.
