Lindsay Mendez and Ryan Scott Oliver

Tony winner Lindsay Mendez and musical theatre songwriter Ryan Scott Oliver have penned a new book aimed at helping early career theatre artists master the business of show business. How to Succeed in Musical Theatre Without Really Dying will release from BenBella Books March 3.

Both Mendez and Oliver have long careers in the theatre. Mendez is a Broadway favorite, last seen on the Main Stem as Mary Flynn in the megahit revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Merrily We Roll Along, a filmed performance of which is now screening in movie theatres. She won a Tony for her Carrie Pipperidge in the 2018 revival of Carousel, and has also starred in Significant OtherDogfightWickedGodspellEveryday Rapture, and Grease. Oliver's musicals include Darling (written with Brett Ryback), the song cycle 35MMJasper in Deadland, and We Foxes.

But more relevant to this latest endeavor, both Mendez and Oliver are also experienced educators. The duo established a training program, Actor Therapy, in 2012, which helps young performers work on audition technique, repertoire development, and career strategy. Oliver is also an adjunct professor at Pace University's musical theatre program.

According to press notes, the upcoming book will expand on Mendez and Oliver's work with Actor Therapy, helping actors stand out, build up their audition books, identify a personal brand, navigate relationships, and thrive long-term.
