A concept EP album of Nat Zegree and Eric Holmes' new musical The King's Critique releases on streaming and digital platforms February 6 via Joy Machine Records.

The work follows a young woman who endeavors to become the first woman ever on stage, causing a tantrum from the King that leads to a kingdom-wide theatre ban. To fight back, she joins forces with a viciously sarcastic witch and a charming actor. The work has previously been developed by Art Lab Productions, under the leadership of Meg Fofonoff, with another workshop planned this spring. The musical is hoping to premiere Off-Broadway in the 2026–2027 season.

The recording features performances from two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz, Marilyn Caserta (Six), Jordan Fisher (Sweeney Todd), Troy Iwata (The Daily Show), and Joy Woods (Gypsy).

Ian Kagey served as engineer, mixer, and producer of the EP, which features orchestrations by Ian Chan. Zegree, Holmes, Fofonoff, Kagey, and Will Van Dyke produce, with Lisa Dozier Shacket serving as executive producer. LDK Productions' Michael Shannon served as general manager.
