Awards Judging Panel Revealed for 2025 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize

The honor is the largest and oldest international playwriting award recognizing women+ writers in the English-speaking theatre.

The judging panel for the 2025 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize has been revealed.

The Blackburn Prize is the largest and oldest international playwriting award recognizing women+ writers in the English-speaking theatre. Celebrating its 47th year, this year's prize will be presented at an invitation-only event March 10 at Playwrights Horizons in New York City.

The 2025 judging panel will consist of three U.S.-based artists and three U.K.-based artists. The panel will include Tony winner Linda Cho, Tony and BAFTA winner Jennifer Ehle, Bristol Old Vic Artistic Director Nancy Medina, playwright Mark Ravenhill, Breaking the Binary Founder George Strus, and Olivier winner Indira Varma.

The winner will be awarded $25,000 and a special, limited-edition piece of art created and signed by Willem De Kooning. A special commendation of $10,000 may also be given at the discretion of the judges, and each finalist will receive $5,000. The finalists for the 2025 prize will be announced in February.

Founded in 1978, the Prize is named for the late American actor, feminist, and writer Susan Smith Blackburn who lived in London during the last 15 years of her life. The Prize has honored more than 500 plays from playwrights throughout the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and other English-speaking countries. Previous winners include Annie Baker, Julia Cho, Caryl Churchill, Jackie Sibblies Drury, Katori Hall, Lucy Kirkwood, Marsha Norman, Lynn Nottage, Dael Orlandersmith, Lucy Prebble, Wendy Wasserstein, Timberlake Wertenbaker, and Cheryl West.
