Stage and screen star John Leguizamo visited Late Night With Seth Meyers November 16 to discuss his performance in the upcoming film The Menu. When the conversation turned to Leguizamo's stage work, Leguizamo revealed that his musical Kiss My Aztec will come to Broadway in 2023.
"It's a really funny take on conquest and genocide," Leguizamo shares of the upcoming work. Watch the complete visit above.
The musical features a book co-written by Leguizamo and Tony Taccone, who directed the former's most recent Broadway solo show, Latin History for Morons. The score, described as a blend of bolero, hip hop, merengue, and rap, features music by Benjamin Velez and lyrics by Leguizamo, Velez, and David Kamp. Based on a screenplay by Leguizamo and Stephen Chbosky, the work focuses on Spain’s attempt to conquer Mesoamerica in the 1600s.
A world premiere played Berkeley Repertory Theatre in 2019, helmed by Taccone and starring Joél Perez. The musical made its East Coast premiere earlier this year at Hartford Stage.
