The 10th anniversary celebration will also inaugurate the California company's $17 million newly-renovated mainstage as well as the brand new 120-seat Audrey Skirball-Kenis Theater. The season opener remains at the theatre's interim stage at the Brentwood Theatre. A new play will also be announced at a later date to fill the fifth season slot.
The 2005-2006 Geffen Playhouse season (subject to change) is as follows:
Joanna Settle directs writer-performer Heather Raffo in her drama, which focuses on a cross-section of Iraqi women providing "a glimpse into what it means to be a woman in the age-old war zone."
Geffen producing director Gilbert Cates stages the Tennessee Williams 1955 Pulitzer Prize winner about the former football hero drowning in his grief after losing his best friend, while his lustful wife longs to produce an heir to inherit the family fortune. John Goodman (Big River, "Roseanne") stars as the ailing birthday boy, Big Daddy.
Geffen artistic director Randall Arney directs the Arthur Miller drama about a man who struggles between his responsibilities to his family and his profession.
David Mamet's work will receive its Los Angeles debut with the playwright taking on directorial duties. A sharp drawing room comedy, the play follows the story of two upper-class women financially independent who share a romantic bond.
Rick Cleveland ("Six Feet Under") performs in the world premiere of his new work which centers on "his fantastic friendship with Bill Clinton, in which he bounces from touring the White House to playing catch with the First Dog and flying in the President's jet to Amsterdam." The work will open the new Audrey Skirball-Kenis Theater at the Geffen Playhouse.
